Overview
This course provides loss prevention professionals with a practical, real‑world understanding of heat transfer and its critical role in fire behaviour, property damage, and risk prevention. Learners will build a clear understanding of the three mechanisms of heat transfer: conduction, convection, and radiation. Through case studies and visual examples, learners will see how these mechanisms influence fire spread, equipment failures and building losses.
Emphasis is placed on recognizing hidden hazards, understanding why code requirements exist, and applying heat transfer principles to recognize root causes of damage before a fire occurs. By the end of the course, participants will be better equipped to assess risk, interpret thermal evidence, and make informed recommendations that reduce fire loss exposure and protect insured property.
The course contains written material, videos, and activities. While the activities are not graded, they are a valuable way to check your understanding. You will need approximately an hour and a half to two hours complete the entire course. You do not need to complete the course in one sitting. You can leave the course and return to it at any time. Your progress will be saved. You must finish all sections to get your certificate of completion.
